9 Sep It was a long time ago, but I don't recall having to drink anything before my early abdominal scans either. Good luck . I never got told about the water before my dating scan this time. For both of my week dating scans I had a internal ultrasound and had to empty my bladder prior to them commencing. Dating scans are offered between 8 and 14 weeks to literally 'date' the pregnancy and check how many babies you are carrying. An 'anomaly' scan is offered between weeks. You will be asked to drink about two pints of water before the scan to fill up your bladder; this pushes up the uterus to give a clearer picture. For my dating ultrasound. I had one at 14 weeks and they told me to drink a litre of water an hour before and do not pee an hour before. I am sure they will tell you what they require. I have never been asked to drink water before any of my ultrasounds, and if they needed to do transvaginal they always specifically ask if I need to pee before they start.
If they didn't give you specific instructions don't worry about it. They would have told you if they thought it mattered.

You only need 1 glass of water, or a small sized bottle of water, go pee before you start and drink it really close to your appt. Drink too much too early and you'll either pee yourself or have to go try to release some of it which sucks. First it depends on how far along you are, I had a an early ultra sound at 8wks 5 days and I was told 2 glasses of water about 2 hours before the exam, this gives the water time to get to your bladder, they did the belly scan and couldn't see anything so they had to do they internal one.
