Without previously playing this system, and without having friends to bounce questions off of, digesting the rules would have certainly been a more daunting task. With that said, there are a few major points I wanted to touch on for this review: In general, I conceive of RPG systems on a spectrum of either being sandbox-driven or narrative-driven.

I think this balance comes fairly close to my arvanis preference, though your own preferences may vary from mine. If you’ve read RPG rulebooks before, you should be able to catch on to the Arcanis system fairly quickly.

Arcanis has its own quirks, but overall the rules are not terribly difficult to grasp, and I arcqnis the presentation of the rules in this book is as clear as can be expected with a game system of this scope. With that said, I will say the trickiest part of the rules system to me is the character creation, which apparently is not uncommon with this system, as one of my friends explained to me, “If you don’t have to rebuild your character at least four times, you’re probably doing it wrong.

The combat system is one of the most enjoyable aspects for me about Arcanis. The basic concept is fairly simple to grasp, and after that the combat moves fluidly and is very entertaining. That said, once you start digging into the rules, arcanix find all sorts of little ways that your character can get more and more effective in the combat system, and this makes the game even more fun. The cover, binding, and paper all seem to be good quality.


The artwork is a little more scarce and lower quality than you would expect compared to book coming from a bigger game company, but since Paradigm is obviously working from a smaller arcania, I think the artwork is acceptable.

Overall I am satisfied with the quality of the product. There arcahis, however, multiple typos throughout the book that can sometimes be confusing.

On that note, Paradigm has released an official errata document clarifying the typos in this book, as well as other books released for this system.

Arcanis takes place in a well developed game world that has evolved for over a decade, so there is plenty of lore and a well developed setting for players to experience. To date I have racanis played around a dozen official modules for Arcanis, plus a “Battle Interactive” read here: Excluding the dungeon crawl, the modules I have played focus more on actual “role playing” and a little less on combat than your average RPG gaming session from other systems, and personally I enjoy this balance quite a lot.

It also requires you, the player, to consider developing other skills for your characters besides just combat skills in order to play the game effectively. In this regard I think Arcanis really stands out from other systems I have played, which tend ardanis go arcanus one combat to the next with much less actual role playing other than the typical “your characters start off in a tavern As such, it is fairly obvious that this book was primarily written for arcains audience that was already familiar, at least to some extent, with the Arcanis setting.

While the book does include some background on the various countries, races, and religions, which is important to the new Arcanis player, a arcnis amount of information about the setting is absent. A good example which another reviewer has also mentioned; this book does not include a map of the Arcanis game world. A pdf document that contains much more information about the setting can be downloaded online, but for a core rulebook such as this one, which be definition should be self-contained, I would have preferred that this information have been included in the book instead of in an online document that you arcahis to hunt around for yourself.

I’m supposing this information was excluded as a cost-cutting measure. And on a related note, several of the starting nations described in the rulebook are now no longer legally playable according to Paradigms official rulings, which really ought to be updated in a new edition of the book. Arcnais who sets out with the intent of developing an RPG rules system has to be concerned with creating a balanced set of rules so that no particular game mechanic or character build can be too overpowered and thereby devalue the others.

In this respect I think Arcanis has done a fair job; but in my humble opinion, maybe too good of a job. After experimenting with various character builds over the course of several weeks, I’ve come to conclude that in the Arcanis system it is relatively easy to build characters that will be very average performers, but it is quite difficult, and takes a lot of research and effort, to build arcamis that will be highly effective.

This leaves me feeling a little dissatisfied that all my effort geared towards thoughtful character construction, game play, and advancement, yields me very marginal performance rewards. On a related note aecanis game balance, I’ve found that Arcanis gives you quite a lot of flexibility to create characters that fit any typical RPG class afcanis, healer, dps, caster, rogue, etcor acranis combinations thereof.

However, in my experience, arcanid caster types in Arcanis have quite a few more options for damage dealing, and particularly AOE, while the melee types mostly shine at tanking. And in particular on the melee issue; if you want to play a glass-cannon type like a rogue or assassin, your effectiveness is quite limited due to the structure of the arcznis sure you can make your rogue very “glassy”, but you will struggle to make him very “cannony”, and the only real arcnais I see for these types is in contributing to zrcanis non-combat aspects of the game.


The errata document that Paradigm recently released has also nerfed some of the few combat options that rogue-types had, further skewing this situation. In this light, I’ve now come to realize why most of the groups I’ve played Arcanis with have been very caster-heavy. One common element in nearly all RPG systems is the ability to craft. In officially sanctioned modules, only the prescribed loot and rewards are allowed to be kept by the characters at the end of the module. So while you can craft whatever items you like in a gaming session, you don’t get to keep them.

Your response to this may vary, but personally I atcanis this highly disappointing since I like to roll at least one character who is a crafter-type in any system that I play. The world of Arcanis is such a rich setting full of history and shades of grey. This book is the successor to the old 3. The crunch of the book is good, but there are some issues so the errata is hand for clarification. There is no map in the book, this can be a issue if you arcaniss know the world or have any of the older products, but this has be rectified by Paradigm through one of their kickstarter so hopefully a world map will be available to the public soon.

They also run an arcaniw play campaign so there are plenty of adventures that you can arcania for free whether you play as Gpg or not. One person found this helpful. The arcanis system is a game for those who already enjoy a good bit of roleplaying game action. It has a a very rich background and plenty of details for a full roleplaying type environment.

The book is fairly nice with full color artwork. Good – Full background history and multiple unique cultures. Bad – no world map. Highlights – widely varied builds of characters at creation. Every choice for character background and history will play an important role to your starting funds, weapon familiarization, and starting skillsets.

In this game you have stamina hit points and something called wounds. I would compare arcais to taking 4 points of constitution damage in a dungeons and dragons game if you are hit by a wound.
